Creative approaches to helping your child through divorce

While a divorce may be in the best interests of all parties, it is rare that either spouse finds it easy to separate. Divorce may only come after many months of effort to reconcile their differences. The realization that the marriage is over can be hard to take.

While it’s difficult enough for adults to cope with divorce, children may find things even more challenging. They may not yet have developed coping strategies for such issues. As a parent, you may need to find creative approaches to providing support. Here are a few suggestions.

Roleplay

Younger children may find it difficult to express their feelings directly. However, the use of roleplay offers a means of facilitating this. Whether your children play with dolls, puppets or action figures, you can use this as an opportunity to play out different scenarios. Even if you only manage to partially relate the scenarios to your divorce, you might still gain some indication of your child’s feelings, which is extremely valuable.

Write to one another

Verbal discussions can put people on the spot, especially children. They have to come up with an answer to your questions almost immediately. Writing offers a viable alternative to this. Whether you are sending emails or handwritten letters to one another, the process will be similar. Your child will have much more time to think and draw up detailed statements about what they’re thinking and feeling.

Your child may struggle at times with the divorce. However, with the right support, they can make it through and even be stronger as a result. Many children go on to succeed after their parents have separated. If you’re considering separation or divorce, make sure you are fully aware of your legal rights as a spouse in Illinois.
